Reading Fairytales

Introduction

Assignment 1. Princess and the pea

morning - blue - eyes - queen - twenty - museum - storm - rain - shoes - king - hair - world - wife - home - black

“Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the —(1)— to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted. There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be. So he came —(2)— again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.

One evening a terrible —(3)— came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the —(4)— poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old —(5)— went to open it.

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her —(6)— and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her —(7)— and out again at the heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.

Well, we’ll soon find that out, thought the old —(8)—. But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took —(9)— mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses. On this the princess had to lie all night. In the —(10)— she was asked how she had slept.

“Oh, very badly!” said she. “I have scarcely closed my —(11)— all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am —(12)— and —(13)— all over my body. It’s horrible!”

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds. Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

So the prince took her for his —(14)—, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the —(15)—, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.

There, that is a true story.”

Assignment 2. Jack and the beanstalk

Jack and the beanstalk. Een sprookje met duistere kanten. Misschien heb je de film ook wel eens gezien. Ook deze keer kun je kijken en meelezen met het verhaal. Beantwoordt de vragen. Dit keer is het geen invul opdracht.

Jack and the Beanstalk

“Once upon a time there was a boy called Jack. He lived with his mother. They were very poor. All they had was a cow.

One morning, Jack’s mother told Jack to take their cow to market and sell her. On the way, Jack met a man. He gave Jack some magic beans for the cow. Jack took the beans and went back home. When Jack’s mother saw the beans she was very angry. She threw the beans out of the window.

The next morning, Jack looked out of the window. There was a giant beanstalk. He went outside and started to climb the beanstalk. He climbed up to the sky through the clouds. Jack saw a beautiful castle. He went inside. Jack heard a voice. “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran into a cupboard. An enormous giant came into the room and sat down. On the table there was a hen and a golden harp. “Lay!” said the giant. The hen laid an egg. It was made of gold. “Sing!” said the giant. The harp began to sing. Soon the giant was asleep.

Jack jumped out of the cupboard. He took the hen and the harp. Suddenly, the harp sang, “Help, master!” The giant woke up and shouted, “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran and started climbing down the beanstalk. The giant came down after him. Jack shouted, “Mother, help!” Jack’s mother took an axe and chopped down the beanstalk. The giant fell and crashed to the ground. Nobody ever saw him again.

With the golden eggs and the magic harp, Jack and his mother lived happily ever after.”

De tweede opdracht is dat je een illustratie gaat tekenen die bij het gedichtje past.

    “The dog was spread out
like a mat on the floor

    His tongue hanging out
    for water chilled and cool

    Dreaming of icy lands
    Made his mouth water

    The fly swooped down and
    made away with the drop!

    The dog’s learnt his lesson
    He’s become a smart guy

    He dreams lovely dreams
    With his mouth closed!”
